Evaluating gypsum solubility potential in hydroeletrical and storage dams its improvement methods  
Abstract


It is evident that an increase in the population and the need for controlling surface waters and producing electrical energy makes the expansion of the storage and hydroelectric dams unavoidable in dry zones like Iran. In some cases, despite the high potential of thestream for building storage and hydroelectric dams such as its water availability storage volume topographical conditions, and properties of the dam axis etc. the existence of gypsum and anhydrite in the dam foundation and abutments can cause concerns in the establishment of the dam. While establishing dam s on such geologic structures is not banned, the behavior of gypsum in the presence of water is always a concern due to its high potential for solubility. Previous research and experience show that such situations have always posed a threat to the safe functioning of the dam In this study, the procedure and scale of gypsum solubility in water has been evaluated. and methods for remediating such foundations in the form of reducing the leakage rate. reducing penetration. and decreasing water solubility potential have been described.
