Combination of micro liquid-liquid extraction with differential pulse voltammetry for determination of TBHQ in edible oil samples by pre-anodized glassy carbon electrode
Abstract

In this research, a method based on a combination of micro liquid-liquid extraction and differential pulse voltammetry has been suggested for the determination of tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) in edible oil samples. To obtain a better voltammetric signal, the electrochemical activation of the glassy carbon electrode was carried out by potentiostatic anodizing in the sulfuric acid solution. After the extraction and addition of the supporting electrolyte, a single drop of the mixture was placed on the surface of the anodized glassy carbon electrode, and the differential pulse voltammetric determination was performed. Different effective parameters on the extraction and electrochemical signals, such as type of extraction solvent, the volume of the solvent, anodizing solution type, and anodizing potential were studied and optimized. The parameters related to the voltammetric method were also investigated. Analytical figures of merit of the method were evaluated under optimized conditions. The dynamic range of 5 to 200 mg kg−1, and detection limit of 1.8 mg kg−1 were obtained. The intra-day and inter-day precisions were less than 6.4 and 6.9%, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was applied for the determination of TBHQ in different edible oil samples by standard addition route. The range of 33.9 to 85.5 mg kg−1 was obtained in these samples. The relative recoveries were in the range of 91 to 110%. The results obtained with the new method were agreeable and comparable to those achieved using high-performance liquid chromatography.
